Let me begin by offering my sincere welcome to His Imperial Highness Prince Takamado, for gracing us with his presence and to all of you from countries around the world who have come to be with us today.
The Federation of Japan Amateur Orchestras, Corp. (JAO) was established on June 23, 1972. In close to a quarter century since then it has grown to the 150 orchestras of today and last year received official recognition from the Ministry of Education. One of the main duties of the JAO is to promote annual nation-wide concerts, which has been done successfully 23 times. Today, we are taking another big step. We are holding the fist International Festival of Amateur Orchestras. With us now are some 200 amateur musicians and their leaders representing 19 different countries. They are joined by 450 amateur musicians from, throughout Japan.
Japan has become a large economic power, but we realize that some people criticize us. This is because they know that a human is a human because it can find balance between the mind and body. I hope that we can continue the development of our creative power into the bright new century. I had once heard the word "amateur" means "to love." Normally, the word "amateur" is used as an antonym for "professional." However, I would like to see the word be used in the meaning of a culturally rich person who does not rely upon technique as much as feelings from the heart.
If music is the international language, then Japan is helping many people from many countries communicate by providing them with a place to "talk to one another" using this language. Last year JAO established a friendship program with BDLO (the Federation of German Amateur Orchestras). My hope is that these kinds of relationships will continue to spread to reach more and more countries.
In closing, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to those companies and groups that have offered their assistance in this festival: Agency for Cultural Affairs, The Nippon Foundation, TOYOTA Motor Corporation, Association for Corporate Support of the Arts, Japan Arts
